John Lennon After The Beatles: Plastic Ono Band
Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon’s first solo album after leaving The Beatles, is also his best one. This great album contains Lennon’s most intense recordings. This is not to say that Lennon did not release more good songs after his debut, but I do think the rest of his recording career is a bit of a let down when compared to this truly excellent debut album.
“Mother opens the album. You can really hear Lennon working through the issues of his childhood in this song. For those of you who don’t know Lennon’s bio that means talking about his mother and father leaving him to grow up with his aunt. When he was 17 his mom was killed in an auto accident by a drunk off duty police officer. The depressing closer, “My Mummy’s Dead,” is also about the pain of losing his mother.
“Hold On” is a very simple song that could be seen as a “throwaway” especially with the silly “cookie!” that you can hear at around one minute into the song. But I definitely don’t see it that way, it’s a great link between the much more intense “Mother” and “I Found Out.”
Plastic Ono Band includes some of his most heavy solo songs including “I Found Out” which has an awesomely raunchy guitar tone and some really great lyrics and “Well Well Well” which showcases the “primal scream” technique Lennon learned about in therapy.
The instrumental part of “Look at Me” sounds a lot like The White Album’s “Julia” but that’s never stopped me from loving it just the same. It’s such a pretty song that I can’t resist it. I think what really makes the album work so well is the contrast between the beautiful songs like “Love,” “Look at Me,” and “Hold On” and the very intense tracks such as “Working Class Hero,” “I Found Out,” and “Well Well Well.” And then there is “God” which isn’t that great musically but which has some of his most insightful lyrics.

Revisiting the Beatles History
One of the very few bands that stand out as a major part of music history and countless rock tees across the generations is The Beatles. It’s impossible to not know who they are simply because music now would not be what it is without them. The group started a crucial movement in history that cemented their legendary status.
Before they became the popular four man band, the group’s story started with an all too different band called The Quarrymen. The reason why this group is mentioned in the story of The Beatles’ origins is because this was John Lennon’s original band. Lennon first played with friends Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe and they were soon joined by Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Sutcliffe left and eventually passed away in 1962 while Best was edged out and replaced by Ringo Starr.
Best was originally lost as to why the band let him off. He was informed that he was no longer wanted. It is possible that the others did not like him because he stood out, preferring a different fashion style and passing up on hanging out with the other members. He seemed popular among the fans because of his good looks but his musical skills were regarded as a bit limited. If he stayed on, it’s possible that the group might have taken a different direction.
With Starr on drums, The Beatles history, as we know it started in 1962. From the very start, Lennon and McCartney took the roles of songwriters and composers. Clearly though, the two composers differed significantly in style and form, a point of disparity that would later become more pronounced as relations among band members became strained. McCartney’s music has been cited to be the more positive and extroverted of the two while Lennon’s work is said to be more mature and grounded in reality.
Regardless of the differences between the composers though, they found common ground in merging a myriad of genres and influences. The revolutionary and inclusive approach of The Beatles is perhaps the main reason why their appeal has stretched across five decades. They are primarily labeled a rock and roll band but they have been known to integrate elements of folk, blues, pop, country, psychedelic and even classical and Celtic music.
What is most striking about the band is that the different influences did not play out as a product of natural evolution. They did not incorporate different elements because they were experimenting or growing up as a group. The mixed influences were simply a part of their identity. Their songs are deemed even more valuable because the variety in them does not reflect dissonance. The incorporation of various elements was performed in a tasteful and artistic manner that encouraged homogeneity. This appealing quality of their work is the reason why other British bands have been given the chance to break out into the international scene.
A deeper analysis of the story and style of band would probably be too excessive. After all, greater musical minds have weighed in and attempted to define the group’s genius and outstanding commercial success. In a sense, there is no definite way to put a box around The Beatles history. Suffice it to say that they opened the doors to the popular acceptance of revolutionary, inventive and overreaching creativity in every band store.
